“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.”
“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol — that our lives had become unmanageable.” — Alcoholics Anonymous (1939) · Chapter 5 · How It WorksWhere it comes from
Step One as printed in Chapter 5 of the 1939 first edition. Bill W. drafted the Steps in 1938, expanding the early fellowship’s informal program into twelve definite proposals.
Today’s reflectionThe only Step that mentions alcohol, and the only one the book treats as needing to be taken completely. It’s also the only one you can take in total defeat — in fact, that’s the only way it works. Powerless isn’t hopeless: admitting the car has no brakes is the first piece of information that can actually save your life. Surrender, here, is intel.

Sober living in Texas: certification is voluntary
A recovery (sober living) home doesn't need certification to operate in Texas, though funders and referral agencies may require it. The Texas Recovery Oriented Housing Network (TROHN), the state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR), certifies homes that meet national standards, renews certification every two years, keeps a directory of certified homes and handles grievances.
A 2023 state law, House Bill 299, set up voluntary accreditation for recovery housing based on NARR and Oxford House standards. Since September 1, 2025, a recovery home that isn't accredited can't receive state money.
Treatment programs are different: Texas Health and Human Services (HHSC) licenses them as chemical dependency treatment facilities, and its website lists licensed facilities.
If cost is a barrier
The North Texas Behavioral Health Authority (NTBHA) provides mental health and substance use treatment for Dallas, Ellis, Hunt, Kaufman, Navarro and Rockwall counties. It says it serves people of all ages regardless of their ability to pay and offers sliding fee discounts. Call or text 214-366-9407, or call toll-free 877-653-6363.
Dialing 2-1-1 reaches Texas 2-1-1, which lists substance use assessment and treatment services. Texas also funds treatment through regional OSAR (Outreach, Screening, Assessment and Referral) programs; HHSC's OSAR page lists the program for your area.

Naloxone (Narcan)
Naloxone reverses an opioid overdose. The FDA has allowed naloxone nasal spray to be sold without a prescription since 2023, and Naloxone Texas distributes free naloxone across the state.
Before you move into a sober home
- Is the home TROHN-certified or an Oxford House? Ask to see proof.
- What does rent cover, what's due at move-in, and is any of it refundable?
- What are the house rules (curfew, chores, meetings, guests), and what happens after a relapse?
- How and how often is drug testing done?
- Does the home accept residents who take medication for addiction treatment, such as buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone?
- Can you read the written resident agreement before you pay?
Be wary of anyone who offers free rent, travel or cash to get you into a particular program. Paying or accepting kickbacks for referrals to recovery homes and treatment facilities is a federal crime (18 U.S.C. § 220).
